The first image is him raising his hands and positioning his fingers right after Me-Vagis-Ba shoots the needle, and the second image is the first frame after he catches it. The 0.003 is the result @Jamesthetaker got, but since I didn't made the pixelscaling I don't know if my answer is strong.

I watched the clip like a dozen times the image that's used to get the distance happens AFTER he already caught it.
We need to know how far away the needle was when he began moving his fingers, the 0.03m distance is just kinda flat out wrong.

Probably because he had to close his fingers to catch the needle, hence why he calculated the distance between his fingers.
Me-Vagis-Ba shots the needle at 00:17:01, Kuuga's first reaction is to move his fingers a bit at 00:17:10 and move his arm up at 00:17:25, and then he catches the needle at 00:19:05. Vagis was 2000 meters away from Kuuga.

Exactly, he was 2000m away, that gives him a BUNCH of time to act and catch it, the feat would be as low as like peak human even if we say Kuuga began to react the moment it was fired as it covered 2000m. The calc assumes that the needle was between his fingers, when he began to close them.
