The Revenant Marvel Comics Discussion Thread

Do we know when the comic is actually set? Like the era? I always felt that this series felt more like a joke, idk.
By design, we don't, as Duggan stated he purposely made characters look as their most recognizable states. If the events are any indications, and ignoring some continuity issues, it would be set after Krakoa Era (Arrako exists), and probably after Eddie lost his King in Black status.

Realistically, it all reminds me of that one Guardians of the Galaxy Starlin's story, in which spores take over all the universe, but they eventually beat it and nobody remembers anything, making it effectively not-happen for all intents.

Though I bet on time travel that'll undo everything.

Everytime someone mentions Knull, I immediately get a flashback of this meme.

Don't forget that his name literally means "fu ck" in Swedish, as Thor mentioned in a "What If?!" story. 🙏

Got some new stuff shown off at SDCC related to Armageddon. My main takeaway is that we're getting a reverse situation from when the X-Men stopped appearing for a bit back when Fox owned the movie rights:

Basically, the plot of the new "Maximum X-Men" series is that the Avengers are gone, so the X-Men are taking over as Earth's defenders.

The Avengers will apparently lose any hints of compassion, conscience, joy, faith, hope, and genuine morality by letting the extremely far-right thrill-killing casual mass-murder fantasy the Punisher join their team after Armageddon devastates much of the planet... Yay...

I obviously disagree with the entire conceptual foundation of superheroes twisted into amoral supremacist "us versus them" war as entertainment propaganda for the military-industrial complex. That turns them into a tool for indoctrinating the public at large with pure satanic evil rather than positive humanitarian inspiration.

For more about that issue, feel free to read my old story if you wish. 🙏

Well, the X-Men characters are largely assholes at best, and complete monsters at worst, so setting them up as ideals to strive towards seems perfectly in character for most modern day Marvel Comics writers and editors, who gladly help to drown the world in the ongoing Kali Yuga that we currently live in, but at least a part of the members of that team are among the least morally distasteful alternatives among them.

Speaking of ideologically amoral X-Men, in "The Hellfire Murder" Wolverine premeditatedly just let Mystique, who is just as satanically evil as the most hardcore Third Reich era Nazis, which the Jason Aaron era Wolverine should be well aware of, set up an enormous power base for herself, out of sheer tribalism/racial supremacism. I am sure that is going to work out splendidly, and have no negative consequences at all for all of her many future innocent victims. 🙏

Base Loki didn't really affect Wanda, regardless? His magic and her chaos magic combined to transform her in a cat. A feat that uses Wanda's own powers to affect her isn't a feat measurable for Loki.

Conversely, we've seen current base Wanda truth-hex base Loki who couldn't actually do anything to resist her powers.

We can agree that Wanda's original defeat of Chthon hinged on a trickery maneuver to outsmart him, but that happened in 2021. Current Wanda is now connected to The Never Queen, and actively embracing and wielding possibility, which is why she can go toe to toe, and is even shown and verbatim stated to be as strong or even above The Elder Gods/Great Old Ones.

Furthermore, this doesn't detract from my claim that current Wanda trapped Chthon in a box? This happened after 2021, so it's perfectly applicable to use instead of her old showing against him. Chthon is also the same entity whose power was recently used to kill and destroy a King in Black in The Venom series. He later went on to kill a Celestial. He has enough feats even without statements to actually balance out his hype.

Shuma's name was changed to legal copyright claims. His feats, and his statements remain the same.

Also, what do you mean? Gargantos in the same story created Gravelrealm, the same realm Vision mentioned was so full of corruption and darkness, it resembled a realm almost opposite to The House of Ideas. He actually got buffed, not reduced.

She straight-up negged Gargantos to such an extent that all the Other Great Old Ones who were previously scared of him came to overthrow him, because she did the work of actually putting him on his deathbed. This is just a factually incorrect and disingenuous assertion to make.

Again, this is false. Loki is specifically a DEFENDER of Eternity, because Eternity is the personification of all stories. Anything above or transcending Eternity is out of Loki's domain for realms. He does not have any influence in the realm of possibility. Possibility is the raw substance and ideas used to create stories inside Eternity, and predate the influence of stories itself. Thus, they exist inside the Mystery.

Loki only has authority over stories that manifest into actuality and reside in the multiverse, aka Eternity. Hence, "Defender" of "Eternity". Hence why he also needed the Eternity mask against Glorian in The Land of Couldn't Be Shouldn't Be.

Strange hasn't defeated nor beaten The Vishanti so this is literally just a bad comparison to make. Doom received a portion of Strange's own soul to become Sorcerer Supreme and gained all of the power with the title. In addition to that, he was amped by the life force of millions of citizens in Latveria, and further added multiple different forms of magic to stack up his power.

He was far, far more powerful than Strange as Sorcerer Supreme. This is an undisputed fact. Choosing to believe Doom is weaker than Strange because he didn't do everything Strange did as Sorcerer Supreme, despite only holding the title for 9 issues whereas Strange has had more than decades with the title, is such a bizarre and unreasonable expectation.

Wanda was already hax enough to defeat Dormammu and Loki at the same time before any specialized magical training by manipulating a universal object and linking it to Dormammu's own Faltine essence. Bringing up "context" is redundant. Strange has rarely beaten Dormammu through raw power as Sorcerer Supreme either. He almost always wins through strategy and wit. The double standard here is wild.

If you think Doctor Strange is anywhere near someone in raw power who overpowered the Vishanti, the very entities that empower the Sorcerer Supreme, then idk what to tell you other than you're just flat-out wrong. Loki isn't really seeing her in raw power either, since Wanda's magic is cosmologically the oldest and strongest in the verse, but at least he's more debatable. Strange isn't.
I was gonna say let's agree to disagree , but on one point i have to address this, you're talking about the classic storyline where wanda reversed the eye of evil back on loki and dormammu who were fighting, she got them from behind, prior to that dormammu oneshotted her . Is that really a usable feat? Avengers #118

As for loki, we have on panel statements of wanda stating she's afraid of fighting against Loki's astral form who in turn Made it clear wanda Magic is inferior to his own , she always have to get him from behind or via cheapshot like in heroes reborn where she deflected a teleportation spell he made to use on thor back to him then we saw her later on ..admits her inferiority to loki's magic .

Domination factor #4

As for modern loki and wanda immunity to story magic, this is up to interpretation , I haven't seen her fight against narrative manipulation yet.

dude stop being such an obsessive doomer. Punisher is not some neo nazi who murder poor innocent people.

The Punisher almost exclusively goes around spree killing powerless poor people as far as I am aware, and he has turned into an ideal for real world extremely xenophobic ethnonationalistic supremacists who want to massacre Muslims, African-Americans, and central and south americans in general. I heavily dislike him and everything he stands for, and even his creator has admitted that he is definitely a villain. 🙏

No. He seems to be a villain protagonist.
dude stop being such an obsessive doomer.
Also, I wouldn't say that I am a doomer, just a rather well-informed highly empathetic and compassionate idealist who gets morally outraged about genuinely evil people, including, but far from limited to, those who unrepentantly systematically severely corrupt many others.

I have not yet reached sufficiently high in my emotional and spiritual development for my faith that all will be well to be absolute, or for me to not become enraged by genuine evil. 🙏

have you even read punisher he does not just blindly killing poor people, he kills criminals even rich ones. He is not some murder of innocents.

Well, under far right writers he seems to mostly have gone around mass-murdering junkies and petty crooks, but you are probably correct in that the portrayals differ a lot. 🙏

See here what the prominent former Punisher writer Mike Baron thinks that the Punisher would and should do, for example. 🙏

What far right writers? Nowadays its always left-leaning writers I see, I don't think Marvel hires any other denomination XD

It is a sad time we live in. Even I occasionally wish for some vigilantes to appear and strike the wicked, corrupt, and evil (have I ever mentioned living in Russia?).
Then again, more often I wish for Superman, or the Second Coming, or any other hero to appear.
Maybe its mankind's laziness, the desire for someone to solve our problems...

Well, definitely not my kind of leftists in that case, and there seems to be an awful lot of war propaganda in Marvel Comics stories, and war propaganda always means "us versus them" instead of compassion and collaboration, but I sympathise with your situation, and personally get extremely outraged by corrupt politicans and oligarchs who are doing whatever they want to enormous amounts of innocent people. 🙏

I see. That makes sense. I do hope the last issue makes it so these events lose continuity, because the whole thing has been way too unserious in terms of tone, and it just reads as illegitimate. I just can't think of it as something applicable to use in a power scaling sense.

Yes, we will, and except for Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), it seems to be a very "street level" team. 🙏

I've noticed that some people mention this, and I’ve started to see that Eisner tends to favor DC over Marvel. A Marvel comic would need to be truly exceptional to win otherwise., nope and it doesn't help that marvel isn't putting out bangers currently though.

Well, I think that Al Ewing's Thor run deserved a nomination, but except for that, virtually everything published by Marvel has been of at best mediocre quality recently in my view. 🙏
