Re Zero Discussion Thread: Season 4 is Real

Dropped this just today, seeing how far this could get with it being an idea thanks to a friend

Episode 11

I don't understand a damn thing what happened in episode 13 of season 2. Natsuki started the second trial, the witches saved him, he bit off his tongue, and then all the witches confessed their love to him. Can you explain what the hell is going on here, because it seems like a complete jumble of events to me?

Natsuki started the second trial,
He was crushed by the possibility of what he left behind. His failures and stuff like the people he wants to save won't even be the people he saves etc.
he bit off his tongue
He couldn't handle Satella's emotions there along with everything that was happening.
and then all the witches confessed their love to him
What? This never happened.

The witches saved him because of their own messed up ways, nothing about their love for him or etc.

As far as I know, the author later refuted this?
He couldn't handle Satella's emotions there along with everything that was happening.
Satella confesses her love to him and tells him he should value himself. He bites off his tongue to die in this world. Remind me, what will this give him? The death of his soul and the inability to be reborn? If so, why didn't Satella stop him? If not, why did the other witches start supporting his decision?

Echidna, at least in the Russian dub, says she loves him as a girl and that her feelings are sincere. The loli witch came to pity Subaru and stroke his head. The witch of lust says she wants to thank him for something and is embarrassed. The witch of wrath also acts like a tsundere.
Perhaps I'm missing something, or maybe the anime cut something out, but this looks like a typical anime scene where all the deities and most powerful beings in the world suddenly become interested in the main character.

By the way, why hasn't Subaru drawn any connection between Satella and Emilia yet?

Not only do they look alike, and Emilia's behavior in one of the routes was identical to Satella's, but Satella, when she came to Subaru in the dream world, told him that he had done so much for her and always saved her.

First, only Satella truly loves him. Echidna loves him because she believes he will sate her curiousity. The other Witches either think he's an okay guy or just outright dislike him.

Echidna wanted to make a contract with Subaru. Minerva knew this would bring him pain, so she told him that there were downsides to the contract. Every Witch present shows up for their own reasons. Echidna revealed how she really feels (her entirely deranged speech) and Subaru realized Echidna's entire personality had been an act from the start.

Satella appears too and tries to explain that she loves him (the anime cuts the Witches explaining how Satella has a split personality, one who is kind and one who is cruel, but both love Subaru). Subaru is having a breakdown as a result of the possibility that he left behind dead worlds rather than restarting the same one, and he can't comprehend the Witches (especially Satella and Echidna) so his means of escape is the habit he's formed: death.

Minerva despises harm so she wants to save him. Typhon respects his decision to die as his own. Sekhmet sides with Typhon. Daphne sides with Minerva as she wants to see if Subaru can kill her Great Rabbit. Satella can only call out to him as he bleeds out. Carmilla both wants to get back at Echidna for tricking her and is disgusted that Subaru refuses to see the love his friends have for him, so she uses her Authority to show him that he has people who love him.

Subaru finally understands that Satella wants him to love and protect himself just as much as others, to include himself among those he will save. So he decides to make an effort in that regard.

Why are they all so interested in him and what would happen if he died in that world?

Echidna wants to explore infinite possibilities with Return by Death. Minerva only cares about stopping people from getting hurt. Typhon knows he's a good person because of her Authority of Pride, and pitied him when he cried. Daphne wanted to see if Subaru would live up to his boasting about killing the Great Rabbit since he killed the White Whale. Sekhmet doesn't care at all, she was just present to instantly kill any Witch who tried to use violence. Carmilla dislikes Subaru but she wanted to piss off Echidna. And Satella says this:
I… love you. Because you… gave me light. Because you took my hand, and you taught me about the world outside. Because… when I trembled on lonely nights, you never stopped holding me close to you. Because when I felt I was all alone, you kissed me and said that I wasn’t. You gave me so many things… That’s why I love you. Because you… you gave me everything.

If Subaru had died in the Castle of Dreams, then according to Echidna he'd experience a Death of the Mind, and he'd end up as an invalid whose soul is convinced it's dead despite the body being fine.

Why are they all so interested in him
They're saving him because of their own messed up beliefs/lives. Not because they're interested in him.

Some of them likes him while others don't. That's just based on the type of people they are and the interaction they had with him. (I'm referring to those six witches, not Satella)
what would happen if he died in that world
Here.

What about this?

What about this?
Subaru acknowledges that Emilia and Satella have identical faces. But Emilia's behaviour in the Taste of Death loop wasn't that similar to Satella.

Emilia had completely collapsed as an individual due to taking the First Trial over and over, and Subaru became a pillar for her own sense of self, basically falling all over Subaru without actually thinking of him.

Meanwhile Satella thinks strongly of Subaru's safety and self-love, and Envy is violently obsessed with him. Satella would never ignore his fatal wounds and Envy would never say "I wouldn't like a Subaru who never looked at anyone else..."

I don't know, their obsession at that moment seemed similar to me. At the very least, Satella's words in the spirit world should have given Subaru something to think about.

I do think it's meant to somewhat evoke Satella given what Emilia was feeling was envy, but it's not to be some one-to-one thing. Emilia also uses a different, less intense word for "I love you" than Satella uses.
