Unpopular Opinions and (Friendly) Rant thread

Pokemon Sinnoh games are overrated as **** (haven't played the switch games I'm only referring to nds games). The region is bland, pokemon availability is trash, it's slow as hell, the map is boring from the start, the environment feels repetitive. The only redeeming quality about the games is that few of the existing Pokemon are very good, the Legendaries, infernape, staraptor, garchomp and few other more Pokemon carries the games hard.
I like the sinnoh games quite a bit but it definitely doesn't win when it comes to vibes or just general design. My personal favorite based on how its overall presented gotta be Alola.

Is this an unpopular opinion? It gets thrown around a lot.

Sinnoh is pretty beloved. It was usually the first pokemon game many people of the 20-25 year folks played. For me it was Pokemon Red but that was because I was playing on pirate sites.
Yeah, but being well liked doesn't make something overrated, and there's nothing wrong with liking something because of nostalgia or because it was one's first experience. My point is, go to any Pokémon community and you'll see very frequently this exact take of how Sinnoh, Unova or even Johto are "overrated", not even that they are bad or have flaws, it's always throwing "overrated" around as if to say "the fans who like or defend them are wrong".

wtf is that pfp

Kalos is the most beautiful region by far in my opinion and has the most potential, but sadly X and Y didn't reach the region's potential.

The things that are thrown around a lot is the slowness of the games and the limited Pokemon availability, that's why there are a lot of people with the same team when playing the games. I've rarely seen people talking about how bland and repetitive the region is

Vzearr a certified FREAK for that name

Hehehe. A lot of people have been weirded out by this little fella. In the One Piece thread it even got called the "Chocolate Imposter Plant Dinosaur thingy".

Hmm... they were tying to design beautiful places since BW, but it was the jump to 3D with XY that really allowed them to go crazy, which you can appreciate in the very first route in Kalos. After that all regions have been gorgeous in one way or another, except for SV, which I'd guess was struggling to balance the open world gameplay with the design and all the other development rushes, and even then some places do look great, like the MC's home. Even Galar has some really nice looking cities and the forests really have atmosphere.

The more we find out about what happened with XY the more of a bummer it becomes. If the leaks are to go by, the game supposedly had like 5 cities and 7 or so routes cut out? Not to mention the lack of a third version or DLC to expand on the region. This last one is understandable since apparently Game Freak wanted to take a small break from Pokémon and try making different games before having to return for Generation VII, but still one can't help to lament a bit that Zygarde and all that part of the story were left out for so long.

My guess is that's mostly because the first two are flaws that even fans of the region consider legitimate issues with the games, methinks. The pokédex got somewhat fixed in Platinum, but it's still held as a strike against Diamond and Pearl. I'm guessing the region itself doesn't come up that much mostly because fans talk about the graphics in general, which has never truly been a particularly strong point in Pokémon, especially, ironically after the jump to 3D. I mean, nice looking location asides, a weak art direction overall has been an issue with the games mostly because it mixes the cartoony designs of the Pokemon themselves, the anime looking characters and realistic looking (and many times lacking in detail) textures, effects and places. From what I've seen, the jump to really more varied landscapes didn't really start until BW when they began to try to recreate iconic places from the real world country that served as inspiration. The earlier regions were less impressive, but the use of cartoony sprite artwork, or at most simple 3D models as background backups, made everything look consistent. Let's not kid ourselves, samey routes and settings were a thing in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn as well.

And even then, if you think Sinnoh is bad that's fine, you can criticize it as much as you want, people can argue back and whatnot. What peeves me is how much "overrated" is thrown around in an attempt to shut down positive mouth regarding anything. Yes I know in theory it simply means "it gets more praise/love/recognition than it deserves", but... when exactly do we know something does not deserve any more of those things? Who can dictate that? Why a popular thing is bad but a cult classic is okay to be praised to high heavens? Why something becoming popular is a bad thing (is it wrong for a lot of people to like something)? Oh, turns out that certain popular thing being praised non-stop is okay and some cult classics don't deserve it then? It's incredibly arbitrary when you think about it. Let's not kid ourselves, people really use it as a smug, sneaky way to say "my opinion and appreciation of this thing I don't hold in high regard is what should take precedence, anyone with a more positive take about it is invalid". Look, I'm not accusing you in particular of this, but a lot of randos online don't even have an issue with something but rather with its popularity or just the fact someone might like it, and posture themselves as some scholars of good taste by saying overrated as if that would invalidate anything the game, anime, movie or whatever did right (you can also spot them when they pick legitimate flaws and drill on them to act as if it ruins the complete experience, ignoring everything the discussed game or anything did nail in the head).

After some reflection I think you're right about that. What I believe is though, is that certain things are loved more than others and certain things are disliked more than the others, it depends on how it appeals to the majority, and the sinnoh games seem to fall in the latter category overall.

I'd say hoenn in particular doesn't really have bad routes or cities, not terrible ones at least, it's the most diverse region among the regions, hoenn is not boring or repetitive at all, the region has volcano ares, rainforest, reefs, underwater, mountains and deserts, and the towns are extremely unique, the only bad thing about the game is that there are too much water routes.

Well, that is pretty much true. And I can get that it may be a bit frustrating sometimes when it's something you really don't see much the appeal of. But I really think popularity shouldn't really be a factor on how one feels about something.

In that same way you're not wrong for not liking something or thinking something is bad or anything, and you're free to criticize it as much as you want (and it would be equally crappy for fans to try to dismiss you as a "hater" or "not getting it".)

Ah, yeah. I had completely forgotten about the desert with the ruins where you find Regirock and Mt. Prye among other things. Was mostly thinking about the more common routes, my bad. And even then, you can excuse Kanto and Johto a bit for limitations and being the earliest entries. I didn't mean to say I thought Kanto, Johto and Hoenn were bad or anything, juat that I thought they were lacking variety, I didn't express myself properly, my bad again.

I PREFER DOING CALCS RELATED TO MY VERSE AND DO MATH ABOUT THESE FEATS, RATHER THAN DOING MATCHUPS OR POWERSCALING.

idk if this is an hot take, but i wanted to say this

Mostly because of the following reasons:

  • Every time i do a matchup, the thread never gets traction because the verses i like are not popular or not popular in powerscaling.
  • Some of the rules of matchmaking are weird, WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN'T CHANGE SOME STUFF ABOUT THE MATCHUP WHEN IT STARTED OR I CAN'T MAKE ANYTHING EXEPT SPEED EQUALIZED (This would be funny asfk to do) and overall other stuff that makes me feel really restricted about it.
  • Overall i really enjoy reworking old verses i like that no one really gives a shit about.

I've only done two calculations ever, but I do admit there is a certain satisfaction to it that doesn't necessarily exist for a CRT.

You know, yesterday i went out with my friends in their town, they told me that there was a dude that sold gas canister (those u put in house kitchen to work and stuff) and said "man, that guy has at least 5000 gas canister there, if they explode our town is gone", i dead ass started calculating the explosion that they would have caused if all the gas canister went off WHILE WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK.

I prolly did something wrong because i got like 12 kilotons lol.

probably got it wrong because you didn't account for the pressure in bars not being the same as an explosion that busts through buildings

I'll use this method https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/U...s/Output_of_a_Gasoline_Tanker_Truck_Exploding

We already get 31773296 j/L (Small building) thanks to this calc.

My friend told me that each tank was about 16 liters, so i'll multiply them for the number of gas canisters.

We have at a low end 700 and at an high end 5000.

Low end = (700*16)*31773296 = 355.860.915.200 Joules or 85.0 tons of tnt (City block level+)
High end = (5000*16)*31773296 = 2.541.863.680.000 Joules or 607.52 Tons of tnt (Multi city block level+)

Never done anything like this, i'm doing this pretty much out of absolute ignorance, but it looks pretty plausible.

I really like the controls for mario in dk94 and gba mario vs dk. It's crazy how influential these games were to the series in terms of movement

This reminds me, I hate how you can't acknowledge that a terrible person did something good because people think you're supporting their actions as a whole. Like I can't admit that Hitler was unironically a great painter because people will take it as me not believing he's one of the worst people in human history, even though I clearly do still believe that.

I'm really curious as to why sonic 3d blast isn't on the genesis expansion pack but fcking sonic spinball is. I swear these people are allergic to actually good games

Hitler is also responsible for much of the stuff that regards animal rights, and he was also one of the first vegans (idk how reliable is this one).

Overall, if Hitler wasn't a genocidal, racist maniac he would have been a somewhat good person.

Unfortunatly, he didn't like the orange Juice

His painting are honestly not that good either
