Canon and Legends should be renamed Disney Canon and Lucasfilm Canon

This really should be done because what Disney has done was create their own canon that is separate from what Lucasfilm has done up until 2014. This is simply because what we consider "Legends" once included G-canon, which in short is George Lucas' own authority. While it is arguable how much of Lucasfilm's EU George Lucas was involved in, what isn't arguable is G-canon.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, all they did was change the highest authority of Lucasfilm from George Lucas to Disney itself. Unfortunately though, no matter what Disney does call everything before the aquisition, it does not invalidate the authority George Lucas himself had over Star Wars before the aquisition. So really, it doesn't make sense to call everything before the aquisition "Legends" because it ends up invalidating the point of G-canon, meaning that George Lucas wasn't a reliable authority on Star Wars or did have the last word on it after all.

So really, the pages should be renamed to "Disney" and "Lucasfilm" because those were the companies incharge of Star Wars at that point and along with primarily creating the canon of their verse.

Also It wasn't George Lucas who made that separation after all, it was Disney. This isn’t like Detective Comics having their crisis events that essentially reboot their universe(s), it’s complete turnover on everything related to Star Wars. With the crisis events DC was still in charge had authority over the stories and characters in between each of them, however this isn’t the case with the acquisition because after Disney bought Lucasfilm, Lucasfilm, along with George Lucas, lost their authority over the characters and stories, this became especially evident when everything pre-2014 was decanonized.

Also, characters like Godzilla for example have media produced and published by different companies and they each have their own canon separated from one another, what exactly is the problem with giving Star Wars the same treatment?

I disagree.

Disney owns the rights to Star Wars and officially rebranded everything from before 2014 as Legends, as it's no longer part of what Disney considered canon. Your point here:
it doesn't make sense to call everything before the aquisition "Legends" because it ends up invalidating the point of G-canon, meaning that George Lucas wasn't a reliable authority on Star Wars or did have the last word on it after all.
Doesn't work, as Disney isn't saying that G-Canon never existed; they're saying that, besides the movies, one comic series, and TCW that nothing else is carried over. Legends still uses G/T/C/S/N canon, and that's not changed or challenged canon wise.

I don't see the point in changing it to Lucasfilm, especially when Lucasfilm still exists and makes Disney Canon products, meaning Lucasfilm canon would lead to confusion. George Lucas or George canon would make more sense than Lucasfilm canon, but still wouldn't be correct since the official branding is just Legends. We even have multiple official sources calling the old canon "Legends":

Q: What about the Darth Plagueis novel, which seemed very coherent with TCW, and KOTOR? :)
Jennifer Heddle: Book is technically Legends but the character is canon since he was mentioned in the prequels.
In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.

Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.

So list me as disagreeing with the change.

@Qawsedf234 While I acknowledge that Lucasfilm still exists and makes Disney canon products, but it is under the management and supervision of Disney.

Although I'm not unwilling to end up having Canon and Legends be renamed to Disney Canon and Expanded Universe canon either.

but it is under the management and supervision of Disney.
It doesn't change that Lucasfilm to this day produces Star Wars content and is one of the major media houses of Disney. Calling Legends Lucasfilm Canon doesn't match the official name of that continuity and it can easily be seen as confusing.

It should just be Legends / Disney Canon or just Legends / Canon. Its the official designations from the franchise owners after all.

But they're calling their own stuff "canon", and yet they don't consider G-canon or George Lucas' vision part of it.

G/T/C/S/N Canon was specifically a Legends canon hierarchy that Disney does not follow. In Disney canon, all sources are equally canon, though live action tends to have more general weight behind it.

So you have two canons that treat material as canon:
  • Legends: Has specific canon levels based on the Star Trek EU stuff, with G/T/C/S/N canon levels, with higher levels overwriting lower levels if they contradict
  • Disney Canon: Has no specific canon levels, with everything being considered equally as canon to other sources

This just means in Legends profiles we'd use the Legends canon levels, while in Disney profiles we'd use the Disney canon standards.

I also disagree

Legends is the offical branding used by the licence holder since 2014 for non Disney Lucasfilm projects and its the widely accepted or used name by the Star Wars fandom as well.

Lucasfilm also still exists as a Disney subsidiary company overseeing Star Wars so the distinction is more confusing then helpful in that respect

@Qawsedf234 Has Disney produced anymore media that's under the branding of "Legends" that hasn't already been published?

Funny thing is, Disney have talked about remaking the original trilogy in some fashion with the remake being canon to their Disney content. That'd make the original trilogy separate from the Disney stuff, if they do it.

That's more of an exception, like I said, it originally was going to be animated for Clone Wars. Although has anything else been published under "Legends" after that?

Anything else?

I’d also note the re-releases for stuff like the Star Wars novels and also the Old Republic MMO which is still going
That's stuff that has already been published before the Disney acquisition though, and Disney doesn't own the MMO, EA does (which might be worse)

Thing is they’ve been titling stuff that wasn’t titled before, the MMO is still overseen by Lucasfilm as per their stewardship and the only reason Legends even exists as a separate continuity is because of Disney

May i ask y'all if we should nominate canon in the profiles' names? As in having to specify "Luke Skywalker (Canon)" and "Luke Skywalker (Legends)"

Or can we have "Luke Skywalker" and "Luke Skywalker (Legends)"?
Imagine having canon in your name

my goat would never

My dream is for my current work to be finished as "Yoda", nothing justifies any other name IMO, and i have a special hate towards "Yoda (Star Wars)"

My preference would be Luke Skywalker (Canon) and Luke Skywalker (Legends). But Luke Skywalker and Luke Skywalker (Legends) would also work.

Like I explained, Disney created their own Canon with Star Wars that is separate from George Lucas' vision of canon, so saying "Luke Skywalker" doesn't fit because if we are really going to go by what is "Canon" and not the extended universe of Disney of pre-2014 Lucasfilm, it would be only G-canon.

It fits, because this CRT got rejected and "Luke Skywalker (Canon)" and "Luke Skywalker (Legends)" would be the correct, as it always was since Carvalho separated them into 2 verses.

I feel like the profiles without the "(Canon)" would be better

since it would probably fit better with the wiki

since for example we have multiple versions of Dio Brando
, but we never call the main one "(Canon)"

I would prefer the former suggestion, but the latter is also fine.

This doesn't work because for the JORGE JOESTAR, it is a separate story that has no connection to the original Jojos manga, and Araki still owns the rights for Jojos, even when projects like JORGE JOESTAR are made.

Meanwhile, George Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney and Disney has made their own canon for Star Wars.

So it should be Luke Skywalker (Disney)

Also if we were really going to have a profile that just says "Luke Skywalker", we'd be looking at G-canon only for it as George Lucas was the one who created Luke Skywalker, not Disney
