Just got out of the theater. It was awesome. The music, the camera angles, the acting. I absolutely LOVE this Luthor, Hoult is deliciously despicable and petty. Maybe, and I say maybe a bit too emotional as I envision Luthor would be more calm even in his private moments like in the animated series from the 90s but that's just me. But for the love of Darth Plagueis the Wise, I love hating that guy.
The Justice gang is pretty good, though Terrific gets the best part and is really great, I loved him. Fight scenes are certainly not on the level of Man of Steel (sorry not sorry, MoS is perfect in this regard and I'll die on that hill) but they're still pretty awesome (my favorites are Terrific dispatching Luthor's military camp to get to the portal and the last shots of the final battle against Luthor's Iron Men, most notably the one where Clark spins on himself with his heat vision on). As for the titular character, I liked that he was more emotional and less confident or stoic than other adaptations. Between the actor and the characterization, he's a very sympathetic guy and very easy to like and believe that he would just do what he does out of principles. Ironically (and that's something I really liked to), he's less of a doormat in his Kent self and has more biting than usual cases where he's normally the clumsy guy who gets thrown around by people. I also love the movie focuses more on the saving people part (and animals) part, with him going out of his way to protect them in the middle of a fight.
And weirdly for me, I love the optimism and the message about "silly" kindness having become sort of subversive in this world where everyone and their mother is cynical. That's exactly what Superman should be. To embody the idealistic heroism, no matter how out of touch it seems, against all odds because that's the right thing to do. It's weird for me because I am much more of a fan of anti/nominal heroes, borderline villain protagonists who are cynical, amoral, ruthless, manipulative and at times outright murderous like Batman, John Wick, Constantine, Kratos, Alice Liddell or Jack Sparrow but here, it felt good to go back to a hero who openly admits he's defending old school heroism just because it's good even if it's extremely hard and he makes mistakes (love that speech to Lex).
If I had to point out flaws, Hawkgirl is underused and just there to say "there are other heroes" and to an extent, Guy Gardner to (even if still pretty good, Nathan Fillion absolutely rocks). The movie is sometimes too on the nose with his message, particulary about fake news and so on. Not sure how I feel about Jor-El and his wife being evil in that version, though I find it interesting in regard to the message of the movie and about how Clark decides what he will do for humanity but the harem part felt too over the top for me, like that part was screaming "Look, they're evil, you should not like them! Bad!" in a pretty ridiculous manner. Like, way in your face. The pacing could also have been better and while very funny, the humor is not always that good, especially with Eve (I know this is the idea but she was really just annoying at times).
Overall, an excellent surprise, I spent a pretty awesome moment and I clapped (along with the entire theater) at the end. Bonus point for the end credits song which is amazing. DCU is off to an excellent start and I hope it will continue in this direction.
Solid 8/10
