The anime version’s explosion was calculated.
The manga version was calculated for fragmentation. The size used was too small, but it should only get up to 7-A anyways.

No that's not how it works, the meteors durability is not country level as well.

He hit it with enough force to cancel out most the meteor's kinetic energy, otherwise the sum of the energy output from the pieces hitting ground would've still been enough to completely wipe out Z City and the surrounding area. Pretty certain that's what was directly stated by Genos, but A) I'm lazy, B) I'm off break in a couple minutes and C) arguing over the meteor feat in this manner isn't very important at all, so I'm not providing scans at the moment

The problem is that his serious and casual self varies a lot. He was serious against elder centipede, but his punch on him was only At 7-B possibly 7-A, yet he's gone casual on far more powerful foes like Orochi. It's just him holding back how strong he throws.
