How Dante fights while in character

Hello, Devil Hunters and Deadweights, this was a blog that I've made a while ago, and is about Dante's hax, some conversation about what we have in the franchise about Dante's indset in fights

So, I'm here to talk about Dante in Vs Threads, recently we had some upgrades for him and most people (supporters of the verse or not) seems to have a different opinion about how Dante fights, if he spams his hax, if he doesn't use anything, or in other words, his "In Character Fighting Style", so i'm here to explain how he works on battle and how he show be used in VS Threads. A quick note: yeah i'm possibly the biggest fan of Dante in this wiki, but I'll be 100% unbiased here, and if you doubt that, just chill and read, see for yourself.

-About Most of DMC fights

First, you need to understand something: most of Dante's fights are against massive fodders to him, being Tier 6,3 or 2, most of the DMC cast it's on Tier 8 and 7, while Dante is far stronger than them and only (maybe) rivaled by the Top and God tiers, depending on his incarnation. Thanks to this, most of his fights don't serve as a good parameter to see a in-character fight, since Dante doesn't need to take seriously. Boss battles in DMC3 and DMC1 are between comparable foes, after that, only Abigail, Void Mundus, Argosax, Urizen and Vergil were real fights, but we have one last problem...

DMC gameplay

As a Hack n' Slash game, DMC (almost) never shows a full fight without gameplay, because it would contradict the very gameplay of the series to see a game with this style having most of his fights on cutscene, only showing their encounter and then the finale, where the fight is basically over, so, the Boss battles from DMC3 (except Vergil), DMC1 and Argosax from DMC2 are going to be ignored here since they basically don't show nothing. However, Abigail, Void Mundus, Vergil and Urizen actually shows us something, because one is from the anime, the other from the novel and the other is a rare exception from the games.

So let's start with Vergil 1

Dante vs Vergil

Ahhh, this fight, this will be easy

Well, the intro for this fight is like 99% of the series, just some talk and a *start* but we don't have any fight, however, we see something in the finale, with Vergil eventually overpowering his brother, and well, we don't see hax (crap)

This one is easy...well, Dante didn't had any hax, lol. He only have some DAs and his 4 classic styles, which are basic (swords, guns, speed and blocks), but we see that even DMC3 Dante, when fighting someone comparable, is 99% serious, we have some people saying that DMC3 Dante even against people comparable will still make jokes, this isn't true.

Next is Dante vs Abigail, and here is where things really start

Dante vs Abigail

Here we see the full fight, and it shows something interesting that is backed up by Urizen after. In their first round, Abigail caught Dante off guard and he is defeated, but in the second, we see how he fights, first, we need to know some things:

- First, Dante was serious and knew that his enemy is strong enough to fight him

- Second, he was under pressure since Abigail was literally killing thousands of humans, and need to finish the fight quickly

- The fight took place in a city, where any destruction can kill someone

Knowing this, Dante went for AP, that his first move, using his Sword, and when he saw that in AP they were comparable, Dante went to...well, AP again, this time with Devil Trigger. We already had a vast array of hax, yet his first and second options in a battle are his base moves + AP.

Now, you can argue that he choose Ap to finish the fight quickly, he had reasons for this, as I listed above

DMCvolume2

Against Void Mundus, in the second novel, we see another close fight, not in details, actually, since the novel makes the (horrible) choice to focus on Beryl while Dante fights Mundus, however, we see that Dante was superior (even in base) and defeats him, again, we don't see any hax, just Dante going with his AP since this was enough, Dante relies in his AP when it's the only thing he needs, in base or in DT. This makes sense with the Anime, actually, in both cases, Dante was reliant on his AP, with people around him or not.

Dante vs Urizen will tell us more...

Dante vs Urizen
This (already) infamous fight shows how Dante is even more reliant on his AP. The fights starts with Dante and his sword, after that we see him dodging attaccks and using guns (See ? Swordmaster, Gunslinger and Trickster), until he is overpowered by that OP shield. Then, he goes to sleep for some minutes, when Nero saves him, now we need to stop and see his situation:

- Nero, his nephew (and Dante already knew), is in a terrible danger

- The opponent is even more dangerous than Mundus

- Trish and Lady are sleeping on the ground too

So his family and friends were in danger, what Dante did ? Wakes up, and pulls DT. Yes, DT, or in other words, AP

In this case he already knew that Urizen in AP is much, MUCH superior, so it could be a opening for Dante to use hax, but he didn't used, again choosing AP, and he gets one shoted again, while he bought time for Nero and V to retreat (Now we also see that Dante doesn't care that much about Trish and Lady, he laughed at them when he saw them getting kicked, and he only said to V to save Nero, nothing about those two, in the campaign we see other examples that basically show us that they are friends but not frieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeends of the core of the heart, Lady doesn't even care that Dante is not coming back, she just says "I'm going to take his office"). So, Dante got one shoted and was going to be captured, until Trish gaved him the Devil Sword Sparda, which *trigger Dante's Davil Trigger* and then...Dante goes to AP, and gets one shoted again.

See ? It's clear, Dante is not only reliant on his AP, he is heavily reliant on it, he probably didn't expected that Urizen was that powerful, and yeah he never had faced someone so much strong than him (He had the Sparda to fight Mundus), so it could be something related to this, but he had time to use hax, so Dante's lack of experience against much more poweful foes it doesn't change the whole scenario, it helps, but it's not enough

"So Dante, are you teling me that Dante doesn't use his hax ?"

No, i'm not saying this, this shows that in character, Dante's focus is on AP, but yes he uses hax, and most importantly, we see that the DT (which is full of hax, and in 5 is in character for him to use SDT) is something usual to him to use in a fight (some people, going by the anime where he almost never used, say that it's not in character for him to use DT in a fight). Even against foes comparable to him in base, his main answer is Devil Trigger, which makes him strong enough to one shot opponents who are comparable to his base, which almost anyone say in a VS Thread.

Devil Trigger, in 2 and later games, passively have Quick Heart, which gives Dante advantage in speed in almost every fight, Chrono Heart (which stops time), Offence Heart (which doubles his strengh), passive healing and many resistances. Some other abilities are passive, like Regen Negation, Fear Manipulation, non physical interaction (a broken one), Instinctive Reactions, so Dante is well-haxed, but some abilities like Quicksilver, Doppelganger and most importantly: Sealing, are not in character for every key, far from that

Sealing is one of the most important hax, if not THE most important. Since it's his answer against broken Regenerationn, resurrections, big AP gaps and complicated scenarios in general. But it's not something that Dante uses freely, he actually only used once, against Mundus. He was a powerful (just a bit) opponent for DMC1 Dante that he can't kill by his own, this scenario only appears again in the series against Urizen in DMC5, and he didn't used Sealing even under heavy pressure of a enemy that he can't defeat just by AP. Many people say that he didn't have time to, but this is wrong, he had a lot of time and even after getting stomped and saved by Nero, Dante's only answer was AP, however, there's a thing that we must consider: Sealing actually comes with Sparda's powers

As stated by DMC5 story, Dante used Sparda's powers to Seal Mundus away, which makes sense since one of the main powers of his father is Sealing, so only DMC1 and Awakened Dante actually have Sealing, one because he have the Sparda as a default Sword, the other because he absorbed it. So the excuse for Dante not using it against being like Argosax is simple: he couldn't, he didn't had the ability.

So Dante, what about the rest of his hax ?

Well, it depends on the key:

- DMC3 Dante will certanly use his arsenal, DT, Quicksilver and Doppelganger

- DMC1 Dante starts with Alastor, and is going to use Time Stop via Bangle of Time

- Anime Dante uses Rebellion and DT

- DMC2 Dante will basically fight with Rebellion and the Hearts (DT)

- DMC4 Dante starts with Yamato (he did this against The Savior), his 4th arsenal, DT and hearts

- DMC5 Dante is by far the strongest in hax since he uses DT (Hearts) and SDT (Durability Negation and Time Slow)

It's almost impossible to see DMC4 Dante using Bangle of Time, or DMC5 Dante using Alastor, or DMC2 Dante using Quicksilver, we barely see him using in-game hax, imagine hax from other games, he still have them , yes, but using them is only for very, veeeery specific scenarios, like if Dante needs two fo him, then the doppelganger will appear, but even against Vergil's Doppelganger, he didn't used. Quicksilver is even more rare since he have Time Hax that he always have like Chrono Heart and later with SDT's Ultimate. In overall, Dante's usage of his hax in VS threads are a bit overestimated in my opinion, as we can clearly see that in hard fights his main strategy, his first and second approach in battle will be 4 Basic Styles + DT, in all incarnations

Well, feel free to tell me what do you think about this, and if you agree or not with what I said here

I've mentioned the point about Dante needing the Sparda Sword to use sealing before, though it has been met with a lot of contention. It might be worth further discussing in this circumstance.

Overall though, I'm very impressed with the level of detail you put into this thread! And it'll be good to finally get some proper conclusions on his in-character moves and abilities. I'm mildly busy right now, so I can't get too involved with this thread, however I pretty much agree with everything here.

One quick point I'd like to make about the sealing. When it comes to why he didn't use sealing against Urizen, there's actually a realllllly simple reason that explains it here. Remember the blood crystal? That crystal object protecting Urizen and preventing any attacks, including projectiles, from getting too close?

Well, Dante's sealing ability works as a projectile.

Think about it

All jokes aside, there are also other major reasons. The Sparda Sword point is still plausible, and it should also be addressed that Dante has always shown great respect for his brother. Given that he knew from the beginning that Urizen was Vergil, it makes sense that he would want to give him a proper fight. Overall, there's just far too many ways to explain why he wouldn't have used sealing against Urizen for it to be a proper argument against Dante being willing to use it.

It's almost like Urizen had advanced knowledge of how Dante's sealing works, and specifically set up a defense against it.
technically that's a bit of a stretch

They are passive skills that enhance his DT, it's permanent, but some of them, like the elemental ones, are not used since he can use these types of power via Devil Arms

Other ones, like Healing Heart, are stated to enhance this ability (or in other words, he already had healing, but this heart amplified the ability) and the Aerial Heart actually works until today, since Dante couldn't fly with his own DT in 1 or 3, only with Alastor or Nevan, but after DMC2 he have Flight on his standard DT

Woooow, that's a really good observation Dark, actually that shield would have avoided Dante's Sealing, you're right

But I believe he didn't had Sealing, like I said, DMC5 kinda retconned his fight against Mundus and states that he used Sparda's power to seal Mundus, so he kinda needs it to seal

But it's not a problem, the Sparda Sword still on his arsenal in the other games, he just let Trish use, so if we take, for example, DMC2 Dante and give him Sparda in the OP, it should be fine for him to use Sealing

Sorry for being offtopic, but i heard that dante uses his some of his hearts, including quick heart in DT. And as i heard, it gives him 10X boost to his speed. Should we add to dmc 2, dmc 4, dmc 5 *put speed here*, higher with DT or something like that.

@Ernest

He already has that in his DMC2 key.

@All

About sealing (**** the retcon), it's implied he needed the power of Sparda to use it against Mundus as well to leave his dimension, the thing is, by DMC2 Dante has surpassed Sparda seeing how easily he defeated Argosax and Void Mundus, it isn't farfetched to say he doesn't need the Sparda Sword to seal enemies, somewhat proven as he can now leave trismagia's dimension on his own, without the need for the DSS.
