The author, Stephanie Meyer, is a Mormon, and that's naturally very important to her. I'm given to understand she drew inspiration from Joseph Smith for Edward Cullen.

I do know she intentionally wrote Edward and Jacob as her ideal men; she said she'd leave her husband if either of them entered her life, she said none of the men in Twilight are under six feet tall in the books, and so on.
