All we know is that if they so will, there is some kind of barrier around them that makes them unable to be sensed by the lower beings and they form a passive reiatsu barrier in which you can't enter really as we saw from some random kido corps guy and the human that aizen killed by standing near them.

Normally you would argue the strength argument but here's something else to gnaw on and it's the Cleaner - It was said that no shinigami can really do anything to the Cleaner:

it's basically an absolute entity in the precipice world, but Aizen just standing there made it vanish as well. The Cleaner is some kind of concept of time that it can forcefully make characters appear in a different time from their original:
