Background:
The Paper School courtyard was filled with the late afternoon sun, the students who had just left the classroom had scattered all over the yard. The sounds of laughter, the sound of shoes and the sound of wind blowing through the trees mixed together to create a familiar peace, until a high-pitched, muffled scream rang out in the middle of the yard, followed by a distorted, crackling laugh like an old speaker about to break.
RAM.
His flickering TV screen head lit up, flashing with colored lines. He stood in the middle of the yard, his hand covered with curved black claws grabbing the horn of Akatsuki, the black-haired girl from the Occult Club—pulling her back like he was pulling a puppet.
“Oh my, look at this~” He pulled her closer, his laughter mechanical.
Akatsuki gritted her teeth, trying to pull RAM’s hand away, but her strength was no match for his. “Let me go!”
A few students around glanced at him and then bowed their heads and walked straight ahead, avoiding trouble as usual. But there was one person who didn’t pass by.
Edgar stood a few meters away, clutching the crumpled sketchbook in his hand. His heart was beating faster than usual, his breathing was ragged with fear and anger. He wasn’t the type to be confrontational, but he also wasn’t the type to stand still and watch his friend being dragged around like a toy.
He took a breath, then stepped forward.
“…RAM. Stop it.” His voice trembled slightly, but his eyes didn’t leave him.
RAM turned his head, the screen flashing with distorted icons, as if mocking him.
“HAH? What are you, weakling?” He didn’t let go of Akatsuki, just conveniently pushed Edgar’s chest.
Edgar fell to the ground, the sketchbook spinning on the ground. His breath caught when his back hit the ground.
RAM roared with laughter. “What a useless thing! What kind of guy is so weak?”
The bell rang. He immediately let go of Akatsuki, waving his hand as if shaking off meaningless dust.
“Bye, loser.”
The words lingered in the air as he walked away, dancing smugly through the crowd after school.
Akatsuki rushed over, pulling Edgar up. Beside her were Wilbur and Gregory, all three of them looking worried.
“Are you okay?”
“Does it hurt anywhere?”
“I should have—”
Edgar nodded slightly, brushing the dust off. “I’m fine…”
Hazel came last.
She still had her usual smile, but it didn’t look like the smile of someone who was worried about a friend. It was… empty. Behind it was a feeling like a cold knife touching the back of her neck.
She stopped next to Edgar for just a few seconds, those emotionless eyes looking at him… then slowly glancing at RAM’s figure disappearing outside the school gate.
The afternoon sun was setting over Seaside Village. The pale orange color stretched across the ruined roofs and dilapidated houses. The air was unnaturally quiet.
RAM whistled as he walked along the coastal road, the TV screen flickering to his merry tune. He didn’t usually take detours, but today his eyes were drawn to a strange place, an abandoned village he’d never seen before.
“Tch, that’s creepy,” he said, but he walked in anyway.
Rotting houses, broken windows, fallen signs. The sea breeze wafted through the cracks in the walls, making a whining sound. But what stopped RAM was a strange sound coming from a small alley, the sound of metal scraping against the ground.
He frowned and walked in.
A body lay sprawled, blood soaking the concrete floor. The wound was mangled like it had been ripped open by a chainsaw. A knife was stuck in the body’s back, the handle covered in blood.
RAM shuddered for a second, then laughed. “Whoa, who’s playing hard?”
The sound of metal echoed behind him again.
Clang… pull… clang…
He turned around.
Hazel stood at the end of the alley.
Not the gentle Hazel, smiling brightly every recess. Not the one who always stood next to Edgar as gentle as the sea. Before him was another version: colder, darker.
She wore a pentagonal mask, white and expressionless. The two eyes behind the mask were red as deep as the night pit.
She lifted the chainsaw.
A jerk sounded.
The engine roared, vibrating, dried blood still lingering on the tongue.
RAM chuckled. “Are you kidding? Just a little girl from that crap club? Think I’m scared of you?”
He bent down, pulled the knife from the corpse’s cold back. Blood dripped onto the floor. He twirled it around his finger, looking even more confident.
“Okay. Come here, baby.”
Hazel didn’t answer.
She just tilted her head… as if she were examining a discarded object.
Then she charged, the chainsaw roaring from the deserted village.
