Surface level fragmentation

Normally with fragmentation the object is broken into pieces however what if instead of it being in pieces it ends up something like this?

would we still use fragmentation or is there a more mathematically accurate way to go about it?
 
I mean that looks like frag, could you be more specific and provide some examples? Like in media and such
