OPM Elder centipede speed upgrade

Genos shoots his energy beam (not just a typical beam but a named one, so it's likely faster than usual) into the sky and right before it's about to hit it's target, Elder Centipede (who was still underground) manages to break through the surface and block the blast. The blast was already shot and super high up when EC was still underground, yet EC outsped the blast and was able to block it. Shouldn't this be warrant a speed upgrade?
