Depends on the calc itself. Sometimes the entire body might not be visible in the scan but we have official height values and official full-size character body models that we can then use as a basis for the torso.

2. If calculations are really necessary, how do I know where to place each colored line?

Use lines for precisely which objects you want to measure.

For example, say you have a man beside a big-ass tower. To differentiate, you draw a red line for the man, and a green line for the tower.

Possibly final: Do you use any app or website from multiple perspectives?

I personally use paint.net but others also use GIMP.
