Basically, take two characters with similarities, and state whether or not they would actually be willing to fight, or would rather sit down and talk about their differences. Bonus points for characters that you wouldn't expect to be here, or aren't on VS wiki pages.
Fan example (seen under Zuko vs Todoroki):
I'll start with my own:
Juli Mizrahi (Xenosaga) vs Koujiro Rinko (SAO)
Similarity: They're both ex-spouses of the supposed greatest (and most infamous) minds of their time (Johacim Mizrahi and Akihiko Kayaba respectively, partly because both men are dead), both conflicted about whether or not the technology their respective worlds have now justifies the pursuits of their husbands' more off-the-rails tendencies.
Result: Both would probably sit down for a coffee one afternoon and recite their life stories. Both would probably also discuss the level of technology that they can provide to the world (VR tech and Encephalon dives, and the ability to mother nearly 'real' people (Alice / MOMO, depending on how you interpret either)).
