Alright, well, I also looked up other sources, and it looks like Radiated Waves are the accepted value in general.

That's because generally speaking characters don't directly make the tectonic plates rub against each other which would give us our natural earthquakes, they punch it.

If the earthquake is real, then is using the radiated energy still a good calculation?

If it is a real earthquake, go the way of the Total Seismic Energy.

You don't have to calculate it, the energy values are already in the links.

Just match it with the appropriate Richter scale rating based on the visuals of the destruction and you're good to go.

Well, what if it was a magnitude outside of the list? Like Magnitude 12, for example? What is the formula?

Alright. I know the formula for Radiated Waves, and that a Magnitude 12 could destroy Earth, but I'd still like to know the formula for Total Seismic Energy. What is the general formula then?

The general formula is this:

10^1.5*(Richter Magnitude)+4.8

Take in mind that this formula is for radiated energy earthquakes only that don't involve moving tectonic plates or meteor strikes, basically this is for earthquakes caused by punches and kicks and that sort of stuff.

Right. I already got that one. What about Total Seismic Energy?
