As a black guy, not really. I don't need a character to be my skin color to relate to them or consider them cool. Roronoa Zoro is my favorite character, but it has nothing to do with his complexion, but has everything to do with his character. Whether he's black or not doesn't really matter, Zoro is a cool character. That's part of why I prefer Peter Parker to Miles Morales, because I relate to Peter more and can understand some of the stuff he goes through more than I do with Miles. So yeah. That's my take on it.

I don’t think so. Anime doesn’t have a lot of black characters because it is primarily reflective of the Japanese population who created it and is designed to appeal to. Only a very small number of blacks live in Japan. That is not to say they can’t include black characters and have them be well-written, but they shouldn’t be put in just for a way for writers to score “diversity points.”
