Because the width of the blast isn't necessarily the width of the crater. Especially for something that radiates enough heat to vaporize the ground, some ground that isn't directly hit by the blast can be vaporized by the sheer heat of the blast.

Aha okay, that makes sense. Although I'm still confused on why we assume it's full-on vaporization of rock?

We see steam coming from the ground, and the ground itself has a large amount of rock within it. Steam is an easy indicator of vaporization

That I know, but the ground is soil, and soil is 40% rock. Why did we assume the whole volume is made of rock when that's clearly not the case?

Well because the rock was also vaporized, meaning the blast has the capability of vaporizing rock. There's also no value for vaporization of soil
