The procedure as is, as occasionally infuriating as it is, is that staff members aren't strictly required to revisit a thread to examine their vote, and their vote isn't invalidated if it becomes generally agreed that their original point (if they made one at all) isn't itself valid. They should be asked to come back or, failing that, other staff members (armed with the knowledge of the situation, preferably), ought to be called in their stead.

Is this a hypothetical or something that's actually happened?
