Only one can be the Apprentice, and they never properly fought in-canon. Let's go.

Rules​

  1. Clone Wars and Sith keys used for Maul and Dooku respectively
  2. Battle takes place in the Castle of Serenno
  3. Start 5 meters away
  4. Maul has both a double-bladed lightsaber and the Blacksaber

Despite Dooku being technically weaker than Anakin and Obi-Wan in ROTS (although the latter probably had some power increase throughout the film, just like Anakin, but in a more subtle way), I kind of can't see Maul performing the same way Dooku did in the 2v1 against Anakin and Obi-Wan.

Dooku was very clever/skillful in taking Obi-Wan out of the game quickly.

And, like, Maul is dumb.

Like, Maul can't let his guard down at any point, because if he gets caught in a force lightning attack, the match is pretty much over.
 
We can say they can match one another in swordplay, but as soon as Force Lightning comes into play, Dooku wins this very easily IMO

Maul can block Force Lightning. So if Dooku simply uses it as his first move, it will be blocked.

But Maul has a terrible habit of underestimating his opponents, especially if he sees that he has the advantage.

So if Maul happens to manage to take down Dooku, I think that problematic personality of Maul's will be his downfall.

I see a situation like Dooku vs. the Night Sisters happening a lot. They managed to knock Dooku to the ground, but Bam! A surprise Force Lightning that defeated them all at once without any chance to defend themselves. I see this happening a lot with Maul.
 
Yeah Dooku should take this, being able to consistently 1v2 CW Anakin and Obi-Wan should put him well beyond Maul who regularly performs comparably to only one of at a time against a wide range of opponents.
 
I already have the headcanon of Dooku being the better apprentice. Not only is he more knowledgeable in the Force, but he has better skill feats compared to Maul. Dooku easily destroying Maul's main rival should already tell you about the gap.
