Cole could remember it like it was yesterday. He remembered every step that took him to where he was now.
The ringing in his ears and pain seering across his mangled flesh as he heard the screams of the dying. Empire City, his city, the only home he'd ever known, descending into chaos. He'd try to run from it, but he grew to find the anarchy welcoming. Stepping into a warzone felt like coming home.

He remembered the thriving power of the Ray Sphere in his hands. The satisfying click of metal as he pressed it together. The rush of power as thousands died. The echoes of Trish in his head as he swore to himself: Never again.
Through passion, I gain strength
He remembered seeing Kessler's mangled, useless body fall back into the crater beneath him. The last of Kessler's life faded from his eyes and Cole's opinion of him remained unchanged. He was an upstart, an incompetent old man to tired to fight for himself, to cowardly to fight when it mattered. Kessler had lectured him in strength, yet he turned out to be weak. What a disappointment.
Through strength, I gain power
Cole remembered every bit of power he gained over his life. Innocent men butchered for Blast Cores, people drained dry for electricity and, on occasion, blood. People were as expendable as batteries, and he would treat them as such.
Through power, I gain victory
Cole remembered the satisfaction of every victory. The satisfaction of Kessler's demise. The thrill of seeing Bloody Mary blown up for trying to control him. The joy of seeing Bertrand's battered excuse for a carcass collapse onto the street before him.
Through victory, my chains are broke
Cole remembered every moment that led up to this. He remembered the Galactic Empire, filled with delusions of grandeur, launching an invasion on his planet. He remembered them trying to invade his town. Enforce laws on his playground. Attack his friends and try to bring him down. He'd made them pay for it. From that blue skinned alien in the fancy suit, to that governor with the cheekbones pressing out of his skull. And now, he had their "leader", their "general" at his mercy. Gasping for air beneath his boot as cracks in his mask revealed the carcass of a man underneath.
The Force shall free me.
Cole remembered every moment that led up to the final zap that silenced the whirring, hissing breaths. He remembered it and loved every second of it.
"Good, good." A mocking, sickly voice said from atop his throne above the stairs. "He was weak, worse than useless. You're far more than I could have possible hoped for." Cole stepped off of Vader's corpse, eyeing the Emperor warily. "You're still quite sure of yourself considering I killed your lieutenant and destroyed most of your army." Cole noted. The Emperor stood up, still grinning ear to ear with rotten teeth and sagging skin. "Yes, well, that is admittedly inconvenient. Tarkin and Thrawn will be missed, they're nearly irreplaceable. But the rest are no object to men like us. Especially with your proven superiority to them."
Cole cocked his head. "What exactly can you offer me? Power? Status? A nice palace? It's pointless to make a deal when I can just take it from you." Palpatine let out a mocking and exaggerated tisk. "The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. Including the ability to conquer death entirely." Cole paused, still in a ready stance. Crimson lightning channeled across his amp absentmindedly.
Cole's head snapped foreword. "Tempting, but no. If you had that power to begin with, you wouldn't look like a shriveled prune." The Emperor's smile vanished, his smug mockery of compassion gone in an instant. "How unfortunate. I could have used you." A crimson blade sprang to life with a hiss. "Now, Mr. MacGrath, you will die."
