I see what you mean. As for it being excessive I’m not too sure actually. He actually is depicted as having scary facial expressions and scaring others with how easily he’s able to read people based on subtle clues. He isn’t actually using any of that in this instance though, an elderly woman just happens to be near him and she instinctively fell due to his expression which frightened her.
