What I mean is the idea of having Gero for a DB may sound exciting in theory but reality is he's not really interesting for a fight

Infinite isn't a Dan Hibiki/Mister Satan-type character, he's actually one of the strongest character in his series. People just find him lame because he's a Modern Shao Kahn tier jobber (also his motivation for destroying the world is that he's salty someone called him 'weak' lol).

Even if Infinite being defeated by a Thwomp could've been handled better, I'll defend Infinite's stuff a bit by saying he got to come in very powerful, but was bested. In canon, Infinite is a bit insecure in a sense in regards to his power, but even this I do think could've been handled better. I do like Infinite, and think he was merely wasted potential.

From what I know, it's a mix of things, his surprisingly underwhelming backstory is one thing, but also I criticism I hear a lot at Forces is how Infinite despite having an incredibly powerful ability had a rather lackluster performance after an initial strong first impression, not helped how he's unceremonously taken out by Eggman. And of course, the whole "very edgy, very tryhard" thing he has going on, which many find rather silly and easy to make fun of (just like Shadown and the whole "Ow the Edge!" meme right before. Though, there are fans that did embrace the whole "badder and better than you" schtick Infinite had and wished to see how far Forces would take it, but were disappointed by the other two things I mentioned).
I mean, he for many, he makes an easy punching bag because of how hard he tries to be cool and fearsome, but falling short due how he actually performs in the story itself, even if he actually is pretty strong.

Infinite wasnt meant to be a joke, but him being a jobber makes his try hard design & attitude even worse, he is definitely a punching bag. Only Homelander & SF Aquaman compare to being unintentional loser like Infinite.

Ofc, Infinite might retro actively be intended loser character, since in the Lightman story Shadow & Infinite were musicians but Shadow then remembered he doesnt like him and just beat him up again.

After what netherrealm did to him, its cuz their character chapter system means the character as which the player gotta fight as beats all the rest till over even if its battles on a consistent basis wouldnt happen
Hence why Street Fighter and Tekken do a better job as handling it, even if you win with a character weaker then the opponent, in canon thats displayed as struggling, with the opponent more or less shrugging it off or even ending in a stalemate with both still on their feet
